Several days before the rash appears, people can have abnormal sensations like pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. People with shingles have described the pain as aching, burning, stabbing, or shock-like. It can be excruciating and often last for weeks. Shingles pain can disrupt your life, making it hard to spend time with family or get through normal everyday activities.
The painful, blistering rash usually erupts in a single stripe on either the left or right side of the face or body. The rash forms over a couple of days, progressing to blisters and then crusting over. Usually, the rash lasts 7 to 10 days and completely heals within 2 to 4 weeks.
